In my practice I also work with adults who are seeking psychological support and art therapists in training. Art psychotherapy is particularly beneficial and sensitive to those who may find talking about experiences difficult. It offers an opportunity to use image making to articulate and express experiences which are challenging and to improve mental, physical and emotional wellness. Unique to art psychotherapy you will have a sense of physically creating something new through the image. This can be particularly supportive and healing when life around us feels confusing or chaotic.
You may be thinking about therapy to explore difficult relationships, you may feel stuck in old habits or behaviours, you be experiencing general or social anxiety, depression, bereavement or loss, family separation, domestic violence, or chronic pain management. Or maybe you would like to use art psychotherapy for personal development to get to know how you work and what makes you you. It is often difficult to try and articulate these experiences in words particularly at the beginning of therapy, in which case using art and creative processes such as poetry or writing offers individuals another medium to express ones experience.
Central to the therapy process I will provide you with a non judgemental , confidential and supportive relationship.
And as with all relationships and all therapy models some are a fit and some are not and I would encourage you through the process to see if art therapy and this therapeuthic relationship is a fit for you. If it is not, I can recommend other art psychotherapy, psychotherapy and counselling psychology referral routes.
